RICHMOND, Va. – Logan Farrar's tenth inning walk-off single gave VCU a 2-1 win over the No. 22 Maryland baseball team at The Diamond in Richmond, Va., Tuesday night.
The Terrapins (27-12, 8-4) took an early 1-0 lead but were unable to scratch out any more runs. Junior LaMonte Wade tallied two hits to lead the offense.
Maryland grabbed the lead in the second. Junior Anthony Papio walked before Tim Lewis was hit by a pitch. Papio then advanced to third on a Jamal Wade flyout. That set up LaWade, who stroked a single through the left side to plate Papio and give the Terps a 1-0 lead.
The Rams tied it in the seventh. Carpenter singled off Shaffer to begin the inning before Machin lined one off the Maryland hurler's leg and into right field for a single to advance Carpenter to third.
Zach Morris replaced Shaffer and induced a double play, but Carpenter would some in to score to tie the game.
In his first appearance since April 1, Shaffer completed six innings, giving up five hits and striking out three.
Maryland notched hits in the third, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth, but couldn't get a run across. VCU loaded the bases again the Terps in the tenth before Farrar's single won the game.
Maryland returns to action Wednesday against the Rams at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
