NEWARK, Del. – Junior Kevin Martir notched three hits to propel the No. 20 Maryland baseball team past Delaware, 9-4, at Bob Hannah Stadium Wednesday night.
The Terrapins (32-13) used a three-run sixth to separate from the Blue Hens. Junior LaMonte Wade provided three RBIs and freshman right-hander pitcher Taylor Bloom picked up his first career win.
Maryland opened the scoring with a four-run second inning. Consecutive singles from Martir and junior Jose Cuas started the frame before junior Anthony Papio walked to load the bases. Freshman Jamal Wade was then hit by a pitch to score Martir and put the Terps up 1-0.
After two Terrapin outs, Cuas scored on an error before junior LaMonte Wade singled to plate a couple of runs and provide Maryland with a 4-0 lead after two.
After Delaware grabbed single runs in the third and fourth, the Terps responded with a tally in the fifth. A single from freshman Kevin Smith, hit by a pitch for sophomore Brandon Lowe and walk for Martir loaded the bases to set up Cuas. The junior from Brooklyn grounded in to a double play, but Smith scored to make it 5-2.
The Blue Hens responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Terps responded with a three-spot in the sixth. Freshman Justin Morris walked with one out before advancing to third on a LaMonte Wade single. Wade would advance to second on the play as the throw from left field came into third.
A wild pitch then plated Morris and advanced Wade before Smith walked. Lowe subsequently laid down a perfect bunt to score Wade. Martir finished the threat with an RBI single to put the Terps up 8-3.
The Terps plated their final run when LaMonte Wade walked to score Papio in the seventh.
Bloom went five innings and gave up just two earned runs to earn the victory. Bobby Ruse, Ryan Selmer and Alex Robinson combined to throw four innings to one-run relief.
