Terps Host Kehoe Twilight Friday

The Maryland track and field team will return home to host the Kehoe Twilight Meet Friday, May 1.

Coming off of strong performances at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore, as well as the Penn Relays, the team looks to continue its success back on home turf. 

The Terps put on a dominant showing at the Morgan State Legacy Meet, taking the women's team title and finishing second in the men's competition on Apr. 17.

In the jump competition, seniors Amber Melville and Thea LaFond continued their spectacular seasons. Melville placed second in the high jump with a mark of 6'00.50 while LaFond competed in the triple jump, finishing with a leap of 42'11.75.

Junior Chioma Onyekwere, who has had a stellar season in the discus and hammer throw events, continued her personal success at Hughes Stadium. Onyekwere won the discus with a mark of 166'01" and finished second in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 162'.

Not far behind Onyekwere in the hammer throw was freshman Claudia Ababio, who finished in third place with a toss of 161'09”.

In the distance events, Alexandra Lucki won the 1500m in 4:31.75 with Myah Hicks just behind in 4:32.18. In the sprints, Micha Powell ran 12.25 in the 100m dash finals and 24.88 in the 200m dash. Noella Anyangwe finished third in the 100m hurdles.

Turning over to the men's competition, senior Derek Holland won the men's triple jump with a mark of  49'10", a season best for Holland.  Holland led the Terps to a second place overall finish.

In the hammer throw event, Pat Cole continued on a roll in his spectacular season with a toss of 192'03 to take the victory.

After transferring from the University of Georgia, sophomore Brandon Thompson has rapidly adjusted and brought great results to the team in the sprinting category. Thompson finished with a 22.01 in the 200m race and a time of 10.82 in the 100m dash finals.

This past weekend, the Terps saw repeated success when they competed in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.

The men's distance medley relay team consisting of Dan Trettel, Alex Leto, Tom Hogarty and Jakub Zivec took the college section title to lead the team at the prestigious track and field event.

The four men ran a total time of 9:55.91 with Trettel finishing his 1200m leg in 3:03.52 and Leto completing the 400m in 47.82.

Hogarty finished the 800m with a time of 1:56.68 followed by Zivec, who capped off the race in 4:07.88.

In the Men's 4x200m relay, Brandon Thompson, Clyde Gross, Trey Sherman and Lionel Wilson ended with a time of 1:27.12 in the preliminary round to qualify for the IC4A finals. Then, in the final, the foursome improved to a 1:26.27 to take third place.

Lisa Meneau, Noella Anyangwe, Taylor Tucker and Thea LaFond finished in a time of 56.43 to place third in the championship race of the shuttle hurdle relay to grab the number two spot on the Maryland Track and Field All-Time list.

At Franklin Stadium in Philadelphia, Cole remained on a positive streak with a hammer throw of 59.63m, improving his school record and finishing sixth overall.

Also finishing with impressive results was Chioma Onyekwere in the women's shot put. Onyekwere snagged a 3rd place finish with a throw of 51'4.25”.

The Terps hope to continue their commendable season when they return home this upcoming weekend, followed by a trip to the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich. on Friday, May 15.
