COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Jose Cuas hit his eighth home run of the season, but the No. 20 Maryland baseball team fell, 6-5, to Indiana Friday night at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
The Terrapins (32-14, 11-5) could not overcome the Hoosiers after falling into an early hole. Sophomore Brandon Lowe drove his two runs to lead Maryland.
Indiana opened the scoring in the first. Brad Hartong smacked a two-out double before Scott Donley drove him home with a single. The Hoosiers grabbed two more runs in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Maryland responded with a three-run bottom half of the third. Senior Tim Lewis notched a one-out single before junior LaMonte Wade walked. Freshman Kevin Smith then drew a walk to bring up Lowe, who stroked a two-RBI single into left. Junior Kevin Martir then laid down a perfect bunt to tie the game at 3-3 after three.
Cuas gave Maryland the lead with a towering solo shot into left.
The Hoosiers took the lead for good in the sixth. With two outs, Smith made an errant throw to first that plated two Indiana runs and made the score 5-4.
The Terps looked to have a run in the seventh, but Wade was gunned down at home trying to score from second on a Martir single.
After Indiana scored in the top of the eighth, Maryland drew a run back on an RBI groundout from Lewis. The Terps then loaded the bases, but Lowe popped up to the shortstop to end the innings.
Ryan Halstead earned his eighth save of the season, shutting down the Terps in the ninth. Maryland sophomore right-hander Mike Shawaryn moved to 10-1 on the year. Jake Kelzer picked up the win for the Hoosiers.
Maryland returns to action tomorrow at 2 p.m., with LHP Robert Galligan on the hill.
