WICHITA, Kan. – University of Maryland junior catcher Kevin Martir is one of 20 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top catcher, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Friday.
Martir is currently batting .338, good enough for 13th in the Big Ten. His slugging percentage (.520) and on-base percentage (.436) both rank in the top-10 in the conference.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native's seven home runs and 41 RBIs are both top-10 conference marks. Martir also has 15 doubles and his .990 fielding percentage is tops among eligible Terps.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2, 2015. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series.
All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 18th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25, 2015.
