COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland track and field team qualified eight student-athletes to compete in the NCAA Regionals in Jacksonville, Fla., this weekend.
All-Americans Thea LaFond and Amber Melville headline the group. LaFond, who won the Big Ten Championship in the triple jump, will focus on that event for NCAA's. LaFond's leap of 44'2.75 at Big Ten's is the third-best mark in the country this season.
Melville is the reigning Big Ten Outdoor and Indoor Champion in the high jump and is top-15 in the nation this season. Freshman Peyton Wade will join Melville in the high jump competition.
After a great year in the throws, Chioma Onyekwere will compete in both the shot put and the discus in Jacksonville. Micha Powell has qualified for the 400m after a solid season in that event that included a personal best of 53.69 at the Big Ten Championships.
Senior Myah Hicks rounds out the qualifiers on the women's side. She will compete in the 800m and holds a personal best of 2:07.26.
On the men's side, Jakub Zivec will compete in the 1500m while Pat Cole is included in the hammer throw. Cole's toss of 199'10” at the Kehoe Twilight Meet is a school record.
