Bustillos Breaks All-Time RBI Record In Regular Season Finale

EAST LANSING, Mich.—Shannon Bustillos mailed a three-run home run to right center, breaking the all-time Maryland RBI record, as the Maryland softball team dropped its regular season finale against Michigan State, 7-4.

Heading into the final game of the series, Bustillos was tied with Lindsay Klein ('04-'07) for first on the all-time RBI list with 148. After the three-run blast, Bustillos sits in sole possession of first with 151 career RBI. In game one of the series, the senior broke the all-time Maryland home run record with a home run in the top of the fourth inning.

"Shannon had some really big at-bats for us this weekend," Head coach Courtney Scott Deifel said after the game. "She has always been clutch for us, so this honor is very deserving. I'm very proud of her."

Scoreless through an inning and a half, Michigan State got on the board first, putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the second. Alyssa McBride hit a RBI single up the middle to score Sarah Gutknecht. Two batters later Lea Foerster lined a triple into right field. The extra-base hit brought to additional Spartan runners home.

The Terps (27-26, 9-14 Big Ten) responded in the third, cutting the MSU lead to 3-1. Corey Schwartz led the inning off with a walk as Bustillos moved the runner to third with a double to left center. Hannah Dewey then drove Schwartz in from third off a sacrifice fly to right field.

Michigan State extended its lead to 5-1, adding two in the home third off a Gutknecht two run home run.

Bustillos' record breaking home run cut the Spartans lead to 5-4 through three and a half. Both Erin Pronobis and Schwartz reached base prior to the home run.

The Spartans added two insurance runs in the fourth to give MSU the game, 7-4, and the series.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser took the loss (19-11) as Dewey and Jaymi Bautista-Geiger saw time from the circle as well.

On the weekend, K. Schmesier led the team from the plate, hitting .667 with five doubles and three RBI. Bustillos made contributions as well, hitting .625 with a 1.500 slugging percentage and four RBI.

Next up the team heads to Columbus to compete in the Big Ten Tournament. Official seeding and a tournament bracket will be announced Sunday evening.
