COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The Maryland baseball team notched a season-high 19 hits en route to a 13-4 victory over Ohio State in front of 1,176 spectators at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium Friday night.
Every starter for the Terrapins (34-16, 12-7) notched a hit and eight nabbed multi-hit games. Sophomore RHP Mike Shawaryn picked up the wins after seven innings of solid work.
“It feels really good,” head coach John Szefc said. “We are three days in to our two-week plan. We've got to enjoy this one tonight and get back at it tomorrow.”
Maryland opened the scoring in the top half of the first. Junior LaMonte Wade doubled to start the game before sophomore Brandon Lowe brought him home with a single to right.
Ohio State responded in the bottom half of the frame. The Buckeyes loaded the bases, but were only able to plate a single run with Nick Sergakis' sac fly drove in Troy Montgomery. Ohio State added another run in the second to take a 2-1 lead.
The Terrapins retook the lead in the fourth. Freshman Kevin Smith doubled to start the frame before scoring on Lowe's two-bagger. Lowe then advanced to third on a passed ball before junior Jose Cuas walked.
Lowe came in to score on an Anthony Papio sac bunt. Freshman Jamal Wade completed the three-run inning with a single to center that scored Cuas.
In the fourth, Smith extended the Maryland lead to 5-2 with a solo shot to left field. The home run was Smith's seventh of the season.
The Terps blew the game open with a two-out rally in the fifth. Papio started the threat with a single to right before Jamal Wade cracked a single to right center to put runners on the corners.
Senior Tim Lewis brought Papio home with a single back up the middle. Freshman Kengo Kawahara then slapped a single to left to plate two more runs and give Maryland an 8-2 lead.
After giving up a couple of runs early, Shawaryn settled down and ended his day with eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched. With the victory, Shawaryn the single-season Maryland record for wins (11), which the right-hander set in his freshman campaign last season.
Maryland added five more runs in the eighth. Martir walked with one out before Cuas ripped a triple to right center to plate the junior. Papio then walked and Tim Lewis singled through the right side to score Cuas.
Kawahara followed with a double down the left field line to drive in Papio. LaMonte Wade then singled up the middle to bring in Lewis and Kawahara.
Ohio State added a couple of runs in the eighth to make the final score 13-4. With the win, Maryland matched its regular season win total of 34 from last season.
The Terrapins return to action tomorrow against the Buckeyes with Robert Galligan on the hill at 3:05 p.m.
