ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman Brendan Burnham (165) and redshirt sophomore Dawson Peck (285) both turned in pins for the Terps, but the visitors came up short dropping a 24-18 decision at the United States Naval Academy Friday afternoon. The Midshipmen earned three bonus point victories and three out of the final four bouts to move to 8-1 on the season. Maryland drops to 4-9 in duals.
Burnham and Navy's John Keck were scoreless for most of the 165-pound bout, before Keck allowed an escape to start the third period. The Midshipman captain continually tried to take Burnham to the mat throughout the match, but the Gibsonia, Pa. native held his ground waiting to make his move. Keck finally managed to take him down halfway through the final period, but a savvy move from the first year Terp reversed him and put his shoulders to the mat for a pin at 5:41.
Peck added to his team lead in pins at Alumni Hall, notching his ninth fall of the season against Nick Mabry. Peck dominated from the early going, then flipped the Midshipman and put him on his back at 1:15. The Chambersburg, Pa. native is now 15-6 on the year, and has pinned three opponents in the first period this season.
Redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) and redshirt junior Billy Rappo (141) also notched wins on the day. 16th-ranked Alexander was challenged late by Navy's Zack Davis, but took care of business with a 6-4 decision to remain undefeated (4-0) in duals. Rappo and Nicholas Gil needed overtime to decide a winner, with Rappo getting a clutch reversal in the final tiebreak period for his team-leading 16th win on the year.
Maryland's dual match against Wisconsin originally scheduled for Sunday, January 24 has been postponed due to the impending winter storm in the greater Maryland area this weekend. The Terps are next scheduled to wrestle on Friday, January 29 at Rutgers.
