Shawaryn Leads Terps Past Rams

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn tossed eight scoreless innings and allowed just one hit as the Maryland baseball team picked up a 1-0 win against Rhode Island in its home opener at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Friday afternoon.

A combined effort from Shawaryn and sophomore Ryan Selmer prevented Rhode Island from putting anyone on base after the fourth. Selmer picked up his second save of the season after working the ninth.

“We pitched really well and we played really good defense,” head coach John Szefc said. “We didn't walk a batter and Mike did a good job of getting them out of there. If you're going to be good you've got to win a lot of different ways.”

After giving up a single in the first inning, Shawaryn was untouchable, his only base runner allowed coming on a hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. Shawaryn retired 22-of-24 batters faced and did not give up a walk.

Maryland tallied its run in the fourth. Sophomore Kevin Smith singled to the shortstop before Nick Dunn slapped a single of his own into center to give the Terps runners on first and second with one down.

Junior Nick Cieri then grounded one to the shortstop Kevin Heiss, who flipped to Chris Hess at second for the force out on Dunn. Hess' ensuing throwing to first was wide of the mark, allowing Smith to score.

Smith ripped a double to left center in the sixth, but was stranded there after Dunn struck out and Cieri flied out.

After his outing Friday, Shawaryn has allowed three runs or less in 15 straight starts dating back to last season. He moved his all-time Maryland record in wins to 25.

The Terps have now won four straight home openers under Szefc.

Maryland returns to action Saturday against Rhode Island at 2:00 p.m. Fans can watch the action live on BTN Plus ($) or listen on the Maryland Baseball Network.
