WASHINGTON, D.C. – Highlighted by a season-high 49.175 on floor, the Maryland gymnastics team posted a 196.025 at the George Washington Quad Meet Sunday afternoon. The Terps' highest team score of the season earned them wins over Rutgers (195.475) and Towson (195.275) while Maryland fell just short to No. 20 George Washington (196.600).
“I'm so proud of this team right now,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “To have four meets in nine days, to go 24 for 24 and to cap it off with a performance like this, it really exceeds our expectations. I'm just really proud of them.”
Senior Kathy Tang tied for second on vault with a 9.850 while sophomore Dominiquea Trotter earned fourth with a 9.825 and junior Sarah Faller tied for fifth with a 9.800. Sophomore Abbie Epperson tied for third on bars with a 9.875. Epperson and sophomore Evelyn Nee tied for fourth on beam with 9.850s.
The team counted no falls and counted no score under a 9.650. Maryland earned 14 scores of 9.800 or higher on the afternoon.
The Terps started the meet on uneven bars, where the team earned a 49.025. Faller led off with a 9.775 and Epperson earned a 9.875. After Nee posted a 9.825, Tang anchored with a 9.825.
Maryland moved to balance beam, where the Terps tied their season high with a 48.900 team score. Epperson tied her career high with a 9.850, a score Nee matched. Trotter posted a 9.825 while freshman Shynelle Agaran earned a 9.725.
The Terps competed next on floor, where the team earned its highest score of the season and no gymnast scored under a 9.750. Junior Leah Slobodin led off with a 9.825, which tied her career high. Freshman Megan McClelland scored a 9.800 while junior Emily Brauckmuller tied her career high with a 9.825. Freshman Macey Roberts tallied a 9.875 and Epperson scored a 9.750. Tang anchored strong with a 9.850.
Maryland moved to vault, where the team finished the meet strong with a 48.925. Tang led the Terps with a 9.850 while Trotter posted a 9.825. Nee and Roberts each earned a 9.725 and Faller led off with a 9.800, which tied her career high.
The Terps return to College Park for the team's final meet of the season next Sunday, March 6. Maryland hosts Pittsburgh, Texas Women's, Yale and George Washington at 2 p.m. in the XFINITY Center. The meet will be live streamed on BTN Plus.
