Incoming Terp Named to Canadian National Team

OTTAWA, Ontario – Incoming Maryland gymnastics freshman Kirsten Peterman was named to the Canadian National Team to participate at the 2016 Pacific Rim Championships this April, as announced by Gymnastics Canada Thursday.

“We are so proud of Kirsten for yet another remarkable accomplishment,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “She's incredibly talented and a hard worker, and I'm thrilled she was chosen to represent her country. I know her Terrapin family here in College Park will be rooting for her.”

Peterman was one of six gymnasts selected to Canada's women's artistic team. The Pacific Rim will be held from April 8-10 in Everett, Wash., and will feature athletes from more than 14 countries, including Canada, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.

A native of Cambridge, Ontario, Peterman has been a Canadian National Team member since 2012. At the Canadian National Championships in 2014, Peterman finished second on balance beam and third on vault, earning a spot on the 2014 World Championships Team.

Twenty-four gymnasts were selected to represent Canada at the Pacific Rim on four teams: women's artistic, men's artistic, rhythmic and trampoline.

The Pacific Rim Championships are held every two years with the last championship held in Richmond, British Columbia. Canada earned 26 total medals at the 2014 Pacific Rim Championships, good for third in team standing.
