GENEVA, Ohio – Redshirt junior Shyheim Brown (149) went undefeated on Saturday, winning five matches to capture the 149-pound title at the National Collegiate Open. Brown and several other Terps wrapped up their 2015-16 campaigns at the tournament, which included wrestlers from over 25 schools across the country.
Brown was on a tear in his opening matches at the event, posting three consecutive technical falls in the 149-pound bracket to advance to the semifinals. There the sixth-seeded Harrisburg, Pa. native knocked off No. 2 seed Joey Moon (North Carolina) to punch his ticket to the final. Brown took out another Tar Heel to capture the championship, defeating No. 5 seed Troy Heilman by decision 8-3. After going behind 0-2 on a first period takedown, Brown rattled off seven straight points and added riding time for the five-point win.
Freshmen Nick Casella (141), Jakob Restrepo (157) and Josh Ugalde (165) all went 2-2 on the day. Casella picked up two consolation decision wins over Tyler Field (Lake Erie) and teammate Brandon Walker (Maryland), before losing in the round of eight. Restrepo notched an opening round win over Alex Klucker (Loch Haven) and a consolation major decision over Ben Heyon (Kent State). Ugalde advanced to the quarterfinals with a major over Zachary Spira (Drexel) and Theodore King (Franklin & Marshall), but then dropped his next two.
Freshman Danny Boychuck (157) took sixth after winning his opening match but deafulting his next three due to injury. Redshirt freshman Brandon Walker's (141) lone victory on the day came by fall, pinning Daniel Clark at 3:16. Redshirt freshman Ryan Diehl (149) picked up a win in his opening match over Marty Marolin (Navy Prep), before dropping his next two.
