COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Kathy Tang won the vault title as the Maryland gymnastics team placed second at the Maryland Five Meet Sunday afternoon. The Terps earned a 194.700 against George Washington (95.725), Texas Woman's (193.575), Pittsburgh (193.475) and Yale (192.275).
“I'm really proud of the team today,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “It was great to honor the senior class, and Kathy had a great day on every event. It's always bittersweet but I think we sent the seniors out with a great team performance.”
Tang and fellow seniors Bailey Philbin and Alex Zimmermann were honored after the meet. The 2016 senior class has been important to the gymnastics program, helping the Terps to three straight NCAA Regional appearances.
Tang earned a 9.850 on vault and floor, placing fourth on floor. Sophomore Abbie Epperson scored a 9.825 on uneven bars, placing second on the apparatus.
The Terps finished the meet with their strongest event on floor, tallying a 49.050. Three Terps scored over a 9.800, including Tang, junior Emily Brauckmuller (9.825) and freshman Macey Roberts (9.825). No Maryland gymnast earned under a 9.750 on the event.
After having a bye in the first rotation, the Terps began competition on vault. Junior Sarah Faller shined in the leadoff position, scoring a 9.750. Roberts and sophomore Dominiquea Trotter both earned 9.775s and Tang anchored with her event-winning 9.850. The team scored a 48.775 on vault.
Maryland moved to bars, where Epperson highlighted with her 9.825. Tang and Faller each scored 9.700 as the Terps earned a 48.575.
On balance beam, sophomore Evelyn Nee led Maryland with a 9.800. Epperson and Faller each earned 9.775s and freshman Shynelle Agaran notch a 9.725.
The Terps travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the B1G Five Meet. Maryland will compete against Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan State and Nebraska. The meet will determine the session schedules for the Big Ten Tournament the following weekend. The B1G Five Meet will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
