COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Madison Nickens hit two home runs and Nick Dunn reached base four times, but the Maryland baseball team fell, 19-10, to George Washington at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Wednesday night.
The Terrapins (5-7) racked up 18 hits and slugged three home runs, with ten players recording hits. In addition to Nickens and Dunn, sophomore Kevin Smith, sophomore Andrew Bechtold and freshman Dan Maynard had multi-hit games.
Maryland opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first. Smith doubled down the left field line before scoring on Dunn's double into left. Junior Nick Cieri then drove home Dunn with a single to make it 2-0 Terps.
After George Washington took the lead in the second, Maryland regained the advantage in the bottom half. Maynard singled with two outs before Smith added a single of his own. Nickens then drilled a 2-2 pitch to center field for a three-run homer. After Dunn singled to right field, Cieri tripled to right to make the score 6-5.
Nickens and Dunn were once again in the center of the action in the fourth. After Nickens tucked a 3-1 pitch inside the foul pole in right for his second home run of the game, Dunn homered to right.
Maryland added runs in the sixth and seventh with Maynard and Bechtold picking up the RBIs.
Dunn raised his average to a team-best .442 and is on a seven-game hitting streak. Smith is now on a 10-game hitting streak. Maryland has nine-plus hits in seven straight games.
Maryland returns to action for a weekend series against Bryant at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday and the game can be heard live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
