MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore Kevin Biondic hit his fifth home run of the season, but the Maryland baseball team fell, 6-4, to Minnesota at Siebert Field Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (19-17, 5-4 Big Ten) built a 4-0 lead, but were unable to complete the victory. Junior Mike Shawaryn struck out four over six and two thirds of an inning while Biondic led the offense with three hits.
Maryland struck first with a pair of runs in the second. Freshman Marty Costes drew a lead-off walk before senior Anthony Papio unleashed an RBI triple to right center. He trotted home for the second run on an Andrew Bechtold ground out to make the score 2-0.
In the third, freshman Nick Dunn ripped a one-out single up the middle to set up Biondic, who unleashed a two-run home run to left field. It was Biondic's fifth homer of the year and gave Maryland a 4-0 lead.
Minnesota plated three runs in both the seventh and the eighth to take the game. In the seventh, consecutive singles off Shawaryn and a walk loaded the bases. Shawaryn then struck out Alex Boxwell, but the ball got away toward Shawaryn down the third base line, and the Terps starter threw the ball away attempting to cut down the runner at home. A pair of runs scored on the play to cut Maryland lead to 4-3.
Dan Motl ripped a two-out RBI double to plate Minnesota's third run of the inning. The eighth inning saw freshman Hunter Parsons start on the hill, only to leave after a strikeout and a HBP. Toby Hanson followed with a single to put two on before Micah Coffey reached on a potential double play ball after an error by Kevin Smith.
A run then scored on a wild pitch before Jordan Smith singled through the middle of a drawn in infield to give Minnesota a 6-4 lead.
After threatening with two runners on in the eighth, Maryland put a man on in the ninth, but was unable to rally.
The Terps return to action next Friday to start a three-game set with Purdue. Action from Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
