COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland freshman outfielder Marty Costes has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Costes slashed .375/.450/.563 over the Terps' 3-1 week. The Baltimore native keyed the Terps offense in their two wins over Penn State, driving in the first run of the game in both contests. In the rubber game against the Nittany Lions, Costes finished a home run away from the cycle in his first career three-hit game. He also saved a run in game one with a sliding catch in left field.
Costes leads all Big Ten freshman in slugging percentage (.528), RBI (32) and home runs (8). He also ranks in the top-10 of the conference in sac files. He leads Maryland with nine multi-RBI games and has a seven game hit streak within an 11-game reached base streak.
The honor is Costes' second of the season, with fellow freshman Nick Dunn (March 7) and Hunter Parsons (April 11) also earning the Freshman of the Week plaudit this season. Maryland now has earned seven Big Ten weekly honors this season, its most conference weekly honors in a single season in school history.
The Terrapins return to action Wednesday for the annual Ripken Cup against Towson. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m., from Ripken Stadium and the action can be heard live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
