Terps Place Third at George Washington Five Meet

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Morgan Bixler won the vault title with a career-best 9.900 as the Maryland gymnastics team scored a 195.275 at the George Washington five meet Friday evening. No. 22 Iowa won the meet with a 196.400 while the 20th-ranked Colonials placed second with a 196.050. Pitt finished fourth (194.725) while William & Mary scored a 192.625.

“I'm really proud of the team for coming out in a road meet and performing really well,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “Morgan and Sarah were incredible for us. I think week-to-week, we're showing more consistency and we're putting the routines we know we have out in competition.”

Freshman Alecia Farina tied for the uneven bars title with a 9.900, which set a personal best. Senior Sarah Faller set a career high on balance beam and finished second with a 9.925. Senior Emily Brauckmuller finished third on floor with a 9.850.

Maryland crossed the 195 mark for the third straight meet and the second meet in a row on the road.

The Terps began the meet on floor, where they scored a 48.875. Sophomore Megan McClelland led off with a 9.750 while senior Leah Slobodin and Farina posted 9.80s. Brauckmuller anchored the Terps with a 9.850.

After a bye in the second rotation, Maryland moved to vault, where the Terps tallied a 48.725. Brauckmuller, Faller and freshman Deanna Magro scored 9.700s. Farina notched a 9.725, and freshman Morgan Bixler set a career high with a 9.900.

The Terps competed on bars in the next rotation and had four scores of 9.800 or higher. Faller led off with a 9.775 and Peterman followed with a 9.800. McClelland tied her career high with a 9.850 and sophomore Shynelle Agaran posted a 9.800. Farina anchored with a career-best 9.900.

Maryland finished the meet on beam, where Faller's 9.925 highlighted the event. Junior Dominiquea Trotter scored a 9.725.

The Terps have a quick turnaround as they host a quad meet Sunday vs. No. 9 Kentucky, Penn and William & Mary in the XFINITY Center at 2 p.m. Maryland will honor seniors Emily Brauckmuller, Sarah Faller and Leah Slobodin during the meet.
