COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's tennis team (2-0, 0-0 B1G) will open up its home schedule this weekend as the Terps host Boston University on Saturday and Richmond University on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT
Led by freshman Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka, the Terps defeated West Virginia 4-2.
Yemelyanenka was undefeated on the day, teaming up with sophomore Arnelle Sullivan to win by a score of 6-3, and then clinching the Terps' win after knocking off Lyn Yuen Choo 6-2, 6-4.
Maryland moved to 2-0 on the season with the win, after defeating Navy last Thursday.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
Boston University is 2-1 on the season, picking up wins against Rhode Island and SUNY Binghamton after dropping its season opener against Dartmouth.
The Terriers are led by 2016 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Sabrina Faybyshev. Faybyshev also garnered 2016 Patriot League Tournament MVP honors. The sophomore is also a force in doubles competition, picking up two early wins with partner Barbara Rodriguez.
Before coming to College Park, BU will face Navy in Annapolis on Friday afternoon.
Opening serve between the Terps and Terriers is set for 11 a.m.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond will enter its match against the Terps fresh off a win against Navy where the Spiders outlasted the Midshipmen 4-3. The win was their first of the season after losing their season opener at William & Mary.
The Spiders' roster features a mix of experienced and inexperienced players, with four freshmen added to the mix this season. They will also rely on the veteran presence of seniors Brittany Boys and Kelsey Williams.
Maryland and Richmond will begin play at the Tennis Center of College Park at 11 a.m.
KEEPING UP WITH THE TERPS
The Terps' fall campaign featured five doubles championships, including one by seniors Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan, who won the ITA Atlantic Regionals and advanced to ITA National Indoors in New York City. To read more about their time in the Big Apple, click here.
Sophomore Caroline Williams was a part of three of those doubles championships, teaming up with fellow sophomore Arnelle Sullivan to win the Bedford Cup, and then with junior Ekaterina Tour to win the Cissie Leary Invitational and the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
Maryland also had contributions from its two freshmen, Saya Usui and Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka. The two won their first collegiate doubles tournament when they took first place at the Tribe Invitational.
Maryland will come into the spring season featuring its first preseason-ranked singles player in five years. Junior Ekaterina Tour cracked the ITA Preseason Singles ranking, the first Terp to do so since Cristina Stancu in 2012. Tour was also ranked the No. 14 singles player in the Atlantic Region.
Teammates Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan were tabbed the No. 1 doubles duo in the Atlantic Region, and Stanova was named the No. 20 singles player in the Atlantic Region.
