Szefc Accepts Head Coaching Position at Virginia Tech

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland baseball head coach John Szefc has accepted the head coaching position at Virginia Tech. A national search for the head coaching position will commence immediately.

“John did a tremendous job taking Maryland baseball to new heights,” Maryland director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. “The foundation John laid helped put Maryland on the college baseball map. He created a winning culture that we could all be proud of.”

“Because of this success, including consecutive NCAA Regional championships and a school record 42 wins in 2015, Maryland has placed itself among the top destinations in college baseball. We will begin a national search and are confident we will find an outstanding coach who is a strong leader, teacher and communicator. We wish John and his family the very best.”

Szefc won 180 games in his five years in College Park, leading Maryland to three NCAA Regional appearances in the last four seasons. Maryland made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2014, 15) for the first time since 1970-71 under Szefc and won a school record 42 games in 2015. The Terrapins advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2014 and 2015, the first two Super Regional appearances in school history.

During his tenure, Szefc became the fastest head coach in Maryland history to ever reach 150 wins and the first head coach to lead Maryland to five straight 30-win seasons. He produced a school record eight draft picks in the 2015 MLB Draft, and a total of 19 draft picks over five years.

Szefc produced three All-Americans and six freshman All-Americans during his time at Maryland.
