EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Maryland cross country team kicked off the season Friday at the Mount St. Mary's 5k duals in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The event served as a warm-up meet to acclimate Maryland's runners as they competed against teams from Navy, George Washington, American, UMBC, Franklin Pierce, and host Mount St. Mary's.
Maryland wrapped up the meet with a 3-3 performance, finishing fourth behind Navy [6-0], George Washington [4-1-1] and American [4-1-1]. The race is scored in a dual-scoring format with each team receiving a dual-meet score against each of its other opponents.
Sophomore Paige Novak finished with a team-best 18:17.87, good for fourth overall.
Freshman Courtney Mann impressed in her college debut, finishing 17th in a field of 94 runners with a mark of 18:52.17. Fellow freshmen Julia Reicin [19:46.24] finished 51st and Emily McAllister [20:10.32] finished 61st.
Sophomore Caroline Augelli finished just over a second behind Mann with a time of 18:53.45, good for 18th overall.
Junior Gaby Go returned to the course Friday, running a 27th-place 19:08.49. Senior Erin Causey finished in 40th running a time of 19:25.43.
Rounding off the field for the Terps, Junior Kiernan Keller finished in 59th [20:01.88], Senior Vickie Ajimoko finished in 62nd [20:12.07] and Junior Obichi Onwukwe finished in 88th [23:08.72].
The team returns to competition next Saturday, September 9 at the Salty Dog Invitational hosted by Navy in Annapolis, Maryland. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. (ET).
