MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 20 Maryland gymnastics team kicked off conference play by placing second in an impressive showing against Minnesota, Northern Illinois and Winona State at the Minnesota Quad meet Friday evening. Minnesota won the meet with a 194.200, followed by Maryland (194.025), Northern Illinois (193.575) and Winona State (184.750).
Freshman Audrey Barber placed second in the all-around, earning a 38.825. Sophomores Alecia Farina and Kristen Peterman also competed in the all-around, posting a 38.275 and 37.900.
Sophomore Morgan Bixler and Barber tied for first on vault with a 9.775, and freshman Karrie Thomas tied for first on floor with a 9.800.
Farina placed second on bars, posting an impressive 9.875.
The Terps started off the meet with a solid start on bars, the strongest event for the team on Friday, as they earned a 48.625. Freshman Emilie LeBlanc and senior Evelyn Nee began the rotation with a pair of 9.700s, and Farina led the way near the end of the rotation with a 9.875.
Farina earned a 9.700 on beam and Barber posted a 9.775 to lead the team in the event. Junior Shynelle Agaran anchored with a 9.725, giving Maryland a score of 48.525.
Peterman led the team off with a 9.700 on floor, and Thomas followed with a score of 9.800. Barber tallied a 9.700 to give the Terps a 48.275.
Maryland notched a 48.600 score on vault, led by Bixler and Barber's pair of 9.775s. Freshman Collea Burgess had a 9.725 in the event.
The Terps are back in action as they face off with Penn State next Friday, Jan. 19 at the XFINITY Center. The meet will take place at 7 p.m. and will be live streamed on BTN Plus.
