COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Redshirt freshman Brandon Cray picked up his seventh dual win of the season and his first career Big Ten victory while the Maryland wrestling team (4-9, 0-7 B1G) fell to No. 1 Penn State (9-0, 5-0 B1G), 47-3 on Saturday.
Cray also earned Maryland's first Big Ten dual win at 125 since the Terrapins joined the conference in 2014.
"Penn State is a really good team," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "They have a lot of very experienced wrestlers who are very talented and who are expected to do big things this season. For us, it was good to see Brandon Cray continue to build and improve the way he has been recently. He's still capable of wrestling even better than he did today, but picking up a win over Penn State is never an easy task. We'll now continue to try and imprrove and get better this week as we head into our final conference road dual at Illinois."
Cray was able to give Maryland a lead in its dual over Penn State for the second consecutive season. After a scoreless opening period, Cray exploded from the down position and took a 2-0 lead with a reversal. He was able to tally 1:39 of riding time in the period and took his 2-0 lead into the final frame.
Penn State's Schnupp was able secure a takedown early in the third period, but Cray quickly neutralized the attack with an escape. He was then able to hold Schnupp off for the remainder of the period, resulting in a 4-2 victory.
The Nittany Lions were then able to pull away from Maryland behind eight bonus point victories. The top-ranked team in the country owns a lineup that features four wrestlers who are ranked at the top spot of their respective weight classes.
Maryland will now conclude its conference road schedule with a dual at Illinois on Jan. 28. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on BTN2Go.
