#4 Maryland to Open B1G Play at Penn State

COLLEGE PARK, Md.  – The fourth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (11-0) will open Big Ten conference play with a road trip to Penn State (7-4) Friday night.
 
The Terps and the Lady Lions will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. Fans can watch the Maryland-Penn State game at BTN2Go.com or the BTN2Go app with the BTN Plus subscriptions. Live stats will also be available.
 
Maryland is back in action after a holiday break. In their last time out, the Terrapins won at Delaware, 77-53, Dec. 20. Freshman Shakira Austin led four Terps in double figures with 17 points, 13 rebounds and a program-record eight blocks in her first career start.
 
Austin earned her second straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor Monday. She has earned four of the seven Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors so far this season, including last week's honor as well.
 
The Terrapins trail the all-time series with the Lady Lions, 14-13, but has won the last five matchups since joining the league in 2015. Most recently, the Terrapins won 69-65 at Penn State on Dec. 31, 2017.
 
Maryland is No. 2 in the country in rebounding margin (+16.5) and No. 5 in rebounds with 48.6 per game. The Terps are also fifth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (32.4) and No. 6 in scoring margin (+26.3).
 
Austin is No. 4 in the country and leads the Big Ten in blocks (3.2). She is No. 13 nationally in rebounds (11.9). Freshman Taylor Mikesell leads the league with 35 threes made so far.
 
Maryland is ranked No. 4 in both the Associated Press poll and the USA Today Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.
 
Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 17th season as the head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 440-119 (.787). She is three wins from 500 in her 20-year head coaching career with a record of 497-149 (.769).
 
After Friday's matchup, Maryland will host Rutgers (7-3) Monday for a "Noon Years Eve" game. The game will feature party hats, and Maryland-themed 2019 glasses.
