Terps Head to Indiana for Big Ten Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps will head out to Bloomington for the 2018 Outdoor Track and Field championships hosted by Indiana University.  The three-day competition will begin on Friday afternoon, May 11th and conclude on Sunday, May 13th.

“This is the point in the season when you need to go out and compete with heart”, said head coach Andrew Valmon. “The marks and times will automatically fall into place if each individual just goes out and puts themselves in the mix to be competitive.  We are looking to put a few kids on the podium this weekend and continue to add to our list of NCAA post-season qualifiers.”

Terps to watch:

Men

  • Sam Shoultz is ranked #1 in the Big Ten with his jump of 2.24m set earlier this season. Shoultz will aim to earn a spot on the podium this weekend.
  • Greg Thompson has demonstrated consistency this outdoor season throwing over 60m for the Discus in almost every competition. Thompson is currently ranked among the top 3 in the Big Ten.
  • Calvin Pitney set a new personal best in the Pole Vault jumping 5.10m last week and will look to propel himself even higher.
  • Kameron Jones and Aaron Robinson both lowered their 400m personal best marks last week and will have strong competition to push them to a new season best in the championships. Alex Leto will double in both the 400m dash and the 200m dash at the championship meet.
  • Patrick Hanley will aim to dip under 30:00 in the 10k this weekend and will have the strength of the other Big Ten contenders to push him around the track.
  • Senior, Louis Corgliano will finish out his campaign in the 3k steeplechase. Corgliano is currently ranked in the top 10 in this event.
  • In the Triple Jump, Carlos Vanzego is ranked in the top 13 in the conference with his season best mark of 14.90m.
  • The men's 4x400m relay (Aaron Robinson, Alex Leto, TJ Bleichner, and Kameron Jones) have run 3:10.41 this season which puts them in a scoring position at the championships.
  • The men's 4x100m relay will also look to add points to the team score with a group comprised of Andrew Alfano, Gaston Assoua, AJ Ruffin, and Eric Thomas.

Women

  • Peyton Wade and Dallyssa Huggins will be the first competitors on the track Friday as they begin the Heptathlon competition. Both women are ranked within the top 10 of this event and will compete in 7 events over the course of Friday and Saturday to earn points for the team.  In addition, both women will compete in the open high jump on Saturday.
  • Xahria Santiago continues a strong freshman campaign where she has already clocked a time of 57.74 this season in the 400m hurdles. Santiago is ranked #3 in the Big Ten.  Thaila Cooper ran a season best of 1:00.46 last week in the 400m hurdles and will have a competitive showing in this event.
  • Emma O'Hara and Claudia Ababio have dominated the throws this season. O'Hara is ranked #6 in the Hammer throw with her lifetime best of 200'9” and Ababio is ranked #5 with her school record throw of 203'3”.  Ababio will also compete in the Discus and Shot Put.

  • Freshman, Christine Laurie will toe the line in the 1500m after setting a personal best earlier this season of 4:26.59.
  • The 4x400m squad (Xahria Santiago, Dai'lyn Merriweather, Cheyenne Jones, and Jai'lyn Merriweather) placed 4th at the indoor championships and have posted a time of 3:37.98 this season.
  • The women's 4x100m squad will make their mark on Sunday with Chandler Baxter, Jewel Smith, Deborah Olawuni, and Dai'lyn Merriweather passing the baton around the track.
