GymTerps Open Season at Home

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland gymnastics team opens the 2019 season Sunday, January 13, at noon. The GymTerps will face Cortland, Penn and West Chester at the XFINITY Center.

"We have such a talented group here and to finally get them out into competition is exciting," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "There really is no ceiling for this group and we want to focus on coming out and starting strong."

Junior Kirsten Peterman and sophomore Audrey Barber were selected as Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch last month. The 2019 Terps debuted at the team's annual Red & Black scrimmage last month, where the GymTerps showcased the new roster to fans.

In addition to Peterman and Barber, Maryland returns junior Alecia Farina and sophomore Sabriyya Rouse as the team's top contributors from last year. The GymTerps will also showcase junior transfer, Tiara Wright

The Terps will feature two members in the freshman classes, 2018 SoCal State Championship qualifier, Sanya Glauber and 2018 Regional Qualifier, Alexsis Rubio.

Sunday's meet promotions include $1 popcorn, poster making contests and scouts day where Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can receive their Maryland Athletics scout patch. Additionally, the GymTerps will meet with fans after the competition to sign autographs.

Up next, the Terps travel to Illinois next Saturday, Jan. 19, to face the Fighting Illini, Maryland will then return to College Park to hosts Michigan in the team's Big Ten home opener on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Maryland competes in the Big Ten, one of the toughest gymnastics conferences. The Big Ten currently has seven teams ranked in the top 30 Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Pre-season Poll: No. 9 Michigan, No. 11 Nebraska, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 22 Illinois, No. 23 Minnesota, No. 27 Penn State and No. 29 Iowa.
