COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The ninth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (15-2, 4-2 B1G) will host Penn State (9-8, 2-4) at the XFINITY Center Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup.
Sunday's game is also Super Hero Day with surprises throughout the day with super heroes. Fans can meet super heroes on the concourse before the game. Sunday's matchup is the 29th all-time between Maryland and Penn State with the series is now tied at 14. Maryland has won six straight matchups since joining the league in 2015. Most recently, the Terps won 77-61 in State College on Dec. 28. The Lady Lions led by one at the start of the third quarter, then the Terrapins won the fourth quarter 21-4.
The Terps fell at No. 17 Michigan State, 77-60, Thursday night. The Terrapins owned the second quarter to cut into the Spartans' 16-point lead. They trailed by just 3 at half, but Michigan State took over the glass in the second half to seal the win. Senior Brianna Fraser led Maryland with 22 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Freshman Taylor Mikesell was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll and Shakira Austin earned her fifth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor Monday. Austin was also named USBWA National Freshman of the Week as well.
Maryland is in the top 10 nationally in rebounds (44.8), rebounding margin (+11.4) and defensive rebounds (31.0). Sophomore Channise Lewis leads the Big Ten in assists (5.5) and assist/turnover ratio (2.7) and Mikesell leads the league in threes made with 51. Austin is second in the Big Ten and sixth in the country in total blocks (48). She needs five to break Marissa Coleman's program freshman record of 52. Austin is also third in the Big Ten in rebounds with 10.9 per game.
Maryland is ranked No. 9 in both the Associated Press poll and in the USA Today Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.
After Sunday's matchup, the Terrapins will travel for a two-game road swing next week. Maryland will play at Ohio State (7-8, 3-3) Thursday at 8 p.m., then at No. 25 Indiana (15-3, 4-2) Sunday at noon. Both games will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
