COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Maryland Cross Country team has set personal bests and made major team improvements though out the first half of the 2019 season. Nearly halfway through the season, junior Christine Laurie and sophomore Sarah Daniels have contributed to the team effort, and pushed each other during every cross country meet.
Both Terps are looking forward to their team performance at the Big Ten Championships being held in Columbus, Ohio on Nov. 3, 2019. Here's what they had to say:
Q: What are the goals of the team going into the B1G TEN Championships?
Laurie: "Our goal for the B1G TEN Championships will be to race with the mentally of leaving it all on the course to improve from our previous Championships."
Daniels: "With so many hardworking athletes who are new to the team and eager to positively contribute in addition to our extremely talented returners, I think we have a lot to show at B1G TEN Championship. We are ready to show the rest of the conference what Maryland is made of."
Q: What is the hardest workout you believe the team has completed?
Laurie: "I think the hardest workout we have completed for cross country would be the 2km in-and-outs where we would run 2km at a fast pace followed continuously by a 2km at a slower pace. This was repeated for a total of 3 'in' and 2 'outs.'"
Q: What are some of the race strategies that work for you all?
Daniels: "I try to focus on sticking with my training partners and having confidence in the work that we've put in leading up to the race. Having such a tight group allows us to push one another throughout a race."
Q: How do you feel the team chemistry has influenced training and competitions?
Laurie: "This year we have a very positive, enthusiastic, and eager team that encourages everyone to be the best versions of themselves. We feed off this energy in workouts and competitions to keep us motivated and hold our teammates accountable."
Be on the look out for Laurie and Daniels at the Penn State National Invite on Oct. 18.
