COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Jahi Jones' upset over No. 11 Taleb Rahmani highlighted the Terps home opener on Friday night at the XFINITY Center Pavilion, but No. 10 Pittsburgh would take down Maryland 27-10. Michael Doetsch and Jaron Smith also earned wins in their bouts, Doetsch improving to 4-1 and Smith improving to 3-0 so far this season in dual competition.
Despite not earning a win in the first three bouts of the night, Brandon Cray, King Sandoval, and Hunter Baxter all battled in close matches. Sandoval was topped by No. 5 Micky Phillippi late in the third period, dropping a 8-6 decision, while Baxter led late into the third period before ultimately being pinned in 6:53 by No. 19 Cole Matthews.
Michael Doetsch earned the Terps' first win of the night, squeezing out a tight 2-0 decision over Dallas Bulsak, getting three points on the board for Maryland. Jahi Jones capitalized on the energy in the Pavilion, knocking off No. 11 Taleb Rahmani by holding onto a 3-2 decision and getting the second-consecutive win for the Terps.
Kyle Cochran dropped an 11-0 major decision to No. 12 Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds, and. No. 20 Philip Spadafora dropped a heartbreaker, giving up a takedown right before the buzzer in the third period, losing 5-4, despite holding an advantage most of the bout.
No. 8 Nino Bonaccorsi earned a 11-3 major decision over Kyle Jasenski at 184 pounds, but Jaron Smith flipped the script and got the Terps' lone bonus point victory of the night, improving to 3-0 in dual meets with a 9-0 major decision over Kellan Stout. Parker Robinson dropped a 10-1 major decision to No. 9 Demetrius Thomas to close the evening at heavyweight.
Up next, Maryland heads to the Virginia Duals where the Terps will face an array of tough competition from Duke, Fresno State, Kent State, Old Dominion, Penn, Rider and Virginia.
