COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team will hit the road this weekend, traveling to Nebraska and Iowa for a pair of Big Ten matches. The Terps will battle Nebraska on Friday before taking on the Iowa Hawkeyes in a Sunday matinee.Â
SERIES HISTORY
Maryland is undefeated against both Iowa and Nebraska since joining the Big Ten. The Terps are 3-0 against Iowa, outscoring the Hawkeyes 13-5 in the meetings. Last season the Terrapins swept Iowa, 4-0, behind a pair of wins from
Eva Alexandrova and
Millie Stretton.
Zoe Kulkarni also picked up a singles victory in the contest.Â
The Terrapins have won both contests against Nebraska since joining the conference, including a 4-2 triumph last season. The Terrapins earned the doubles point behind wins from its top two tandems, and then secured the match behind singles wins from Alexandrova, Kulkarni and senior
Ekaterina Tour. Maryland's previous win over the Huskers came in a 7-0 shutout back in 2015.Â
SCOUTING THE HUSKERS
Nebraska enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-14, which includes an 0-6 mark in conference play. The Huskers have lost their last eight outings, with the latest coming by way of a tight, 4-3 loss to Purdue. The Huskers won the doubles point to begin the match but Purdue responded to win four singles matches to take the one-point victory.Â
All eight of Nebraska's wins have come at home, while the team is 0-4 in road contests. Claire Reifeis leads the way for the Huskers with a team-high 13 wins in singles action. She has won five matches at the top singles spot, with the eight additional victories coming at second singles. Reifeis has also excelled in doubles play, winning nine matches between the second and third slots with partner Jessica Aragon. Nebraska's top tandem of Marina Cozac and Vasanti Shinde have won eight matches at the top spot.Â
SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES
Coming into a weekend where it will host Rutgers and Maryland, the Iowa Hawkeyes stand with an overall record of 10-8 that features a 2-4 mark in conference action. Iowa will host Rutgers on Friday before welcoming the Terrapins on Sunday. The Hawkeyes have won their last two matches entering this weekend's action, sweeping a weekend set against Purdue and Indiana.Â
Iowa will be led by Elise van Huevelen, the 2017 B1G Freshman of the Year who has spent most of her time at the top two spots of the Hawkeye lineup. She is the lone Hawkeye to win a pair of conference matches. van Huevelen and doubles partner Samantha Mannix have tallied the most doubles wins at the top spot, picking up a trio of victories that includes one in conference play.Â
