COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Graduate student
Erica Evans was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Evans tallied season-best six goals and an assist, a season-high seven point performance to lead No. 2 Maryland to a 19-12 win over #23 Johns Hopkins to clinch the outright Big Ten title on Saturday night. Evans scored on all six of her shots in the game, shooting 1.000 percent and was a perfect 2-for-2 on free position, scoring three goals in each of the first and second halves and assisting on a
Brindi Griffin goal in the first half.
The graduate student now is second on the team with 41 goals and third with 51 points, while also totaling 15 groundballs and five caused turnovers. Evans has at least four goals (14 in total) in each of the last three games, leading the Terps in goals scored over that time span.
The fifth overall pick in the WPLL Draft last week, the highest of the five Terps selected, this is the first ever Big Ten weekly honor for Evans, who transferred from Canisius this offseason. Maryland has now won 10 Big Ten weekly honors this season with senior
Megan Taylor winning six Defensive Player of the Week awards, junior
Kali Hartshorn winning two Offensive Player of the Week honors, and both senior
Caroline Steele and now Evans winning one apiece.
Evans and the Terps will begin the 2019 postseason this weekend at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md. at the Big Ten Tournament. Maryland will play Penn State at Friday at 5:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
