NEW YORK – Former Maryland baseball player Mike Shawaryn (2014-16) was called up to join the Boston Red Sox Thursday afternoon. When he debuts, Shawaryn will be the 26
th Terp to play in Major League Baseball.
The Red Sox will faceoff with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in a four-game series this weekend. The series opener is Thursday night with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m., with coverage on MLB Network.
Shawaryn, who the Red Sox drafted in fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, holds five school records including his 30 career wins, 307 career strikeouts and 307.1 career innings pitched.
A consensus All-American in 2015, Shawaryn set the Maryland school record for single season wins (13) and strikeouts (138) as Maryland advanced to an NCAA Super Regional for the second time in school history. Shawaryn notched a 1.71 ERA in 116 innings pitched and was a unanimous All-Big Ten first-team honors.
In 2014, Shawaryn was named a freshman All-American after helping the Terps advance to their first Super Regional in school history. He led the ACC with 11 wins and posted a 3.12 ERA in 92.1 innings with 72 strikeouts. A five-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week selection, Shawaryn also pitched for the USA Collegiate National Team.
Shawaryn's final season in College Park in 2016 saw him notch a 3.18 ERA in 99 innings pitched with 92 strikeouts. Before his call up to the bigs, Shawaryn boasted a 3.60 ERA in 355.1 minor league innings. This season for Triple-A Pawtucket, Shawaryn has a 3.72 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 55.1 innings pitched.
