Women's Tennis to Face Southern Utah, Towson and Coppin State


COLLEGE PARK, Md. --  The Maryland women's tennis team is set to face three opponents this weekend after starting off the season 1-0 with a win over Georgetown. The Terps will take on Southern Utah, Towson and Coppin State at the Junior Tennis Champions Center. 

Maryland is coming off a 4-3 victory over the Hoyas, highlighted by first taking the doubles point uncontested, 3-0. Freshman Ayana Akli and senior Kate Yemelyanenka, along with sophomore Chloe Hamlin and junior Zoe Kulkarni each defeated their doubles opponents 6-0 in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches Akli, Kulkarni and senior Saya Usui finished the day strong for the Terps, each winning their singles matches to clinch the victory for Maryland. 

The Terps will face the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Friday, Jan. 24 at noon for the first time in program history. The Thunderbirds come to the match 0-4 on the season, recently losing 0-7 against Colorado. 

Play will continue for Maryland on Saturday, Jan. 25 in a double header. The Terps will compete first against Towson at 11:30 a.m., followed by Coppin State at 3:30 p.m. 

The Terrapins last met Towson in 2013, winning the match in a shutout 7-0. The Tigers are currently 1-1 for the 2020 season, losing its most recent match 7-0 against No. 20 Virginia. 

Saturday will also be the first meeting between Maryland and the Coppin State Eagles, who will be starting their 2020 campaign against the Terps.
