COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â The University of Maryland men's lacrosse team will begin it's 95
th season of varsity competition Saturday, February 1 when the fourth-ranked Terrapins host No. 20 High Point at Maryland Stadium. Faceoff is slated for noon,
and the game will be streamed on BTN+.
The Terps return to the field after a 12-5 finish in 2019 while advancing to last season's NCAA Quarterfinals. Â Â
STORYLINES BY THE NUMBERS
3 – Maryland is 3-0 all-time vs. High Point, which includes a 16-14 victory over the Panthers when the teams last met on Saturday, February 17 in High Point, N.C. Maryland took out HPU 19-5 when the teams last played at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium during the Terrapins' 2017 National Championship season.
6 – Six Terps were named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Media All-America team – tied for the second most of any school. Senior Jared Bernhardt (Second Team), Junior Bubba Fairman (Third Team), junior Anthony DeMaio (Third Team), junior Logan Wisnauskas (Third Team), junior Roman Puglise (Honorable Mention) and sophomore Brett Makar (Honorable Mention) were all voted to this year's preseason team.Â
7 – Maryland responded admirably to the NCAA's new 20-second clear last season, ranking seventh in the nation in clearing percentage (87.8%). The Terrapins have remained one of the nation's most consistent clearing teams under head coach John Tillman, ranking in the top ten nationally in clearing percentage in four out of the past six seasons. Â
24 – Maryland has won 24 straight games under head coach John Tillman when allowing opponents under 10 goals. The Terrapins are 96-11 overall under Tillman when allowing less than 10 goals, a testament to the consistency under Tillman's guidance since 2011.
20 – Maryland is one of two teams in the country to return two players who finished in the top-20 in points per game last season. Logan Wisnauskas (4.65) and Jared Bernhardt (4.59) are both back to lead the Maryland attack after the pair reached historic levels of production in 2019 – becoming the first Maryland duo to each finish with over 70 points in the same season.
26 – Maryland has won 26 consecutive season-opening games dating back to the 1994 season. The Terps are 90-3-1 all-time in season opening games dating back to the program's first varsity season in 1924.
35 – Maryland was one of the most efficient offensive teams in the nation last season, ranking third nationally in shooting percentage (35.1%). Three returning Terps in Jared Bernhardt (42.5%), Logan Wisnauskas (41.9%) and Kyle Long (40%) all shot over 40% last season.
79 – Maryland returns 79% of its scoring offense in 2020, which includes five of the team's top-six scorers from a season ago. The Terps bring back an even larger percentage of assist-makers from 2019, as 86% of last year's assists were tallied from Terps on this year's roster.Â
