Maryland Sweeps Big Ten Weekly Awards

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – For the first time since in inception of the Big Ten Lacrosse Conference in 2015, Maryland has swept all four weekly conference awards as announced by the conference offices today.

Jared Bernhardt was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Matt Rahill was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week, goalie Chris Brandau earned Specialist of the Week plaudits and Daniel Maltz rounded out the list as Freshman of the Week.

This is Bernhardt's second career honor as the B1G Offensive Player of the Week after pacing Maryland offense with four goals and two assists last week vs. No. 6 Penn. The Longwood, Fla. native posted his fourth consecutive hat trick in the victory, while also scooping three ground balls in Maryland's 17-15 comeback victory over No. 6 Penn.

Rahill earned his first career Big Ten DPOW honor after scoring a goal and grabbing two ground balls in Maryland's win over the Quakers. The Chalfont, Pa. native helped key Maryland's second half comeback, which included killing a 4 vs. 6 penalty kill in the third quarter that helped swing the game's momentum.

Brandau was named Specialist of the Week after tallying a career-high 19 saves against Penn, including 13 in the second half. Brandau helped spark Maryland's defense in the second half, not allowing a goal in the final 22:58 of play. The Boy's Latin product also caused a turnover and picked up four ground balls. Brandau also earned a spot on the USILA Team of the Week.

Maltz was critical in Maryland's comeback efforts vs. the Quakers, scoring five goals to help the Terps seal the win. Maltz scored four of his five goals during Maryland's eight-goal run to end the game, as UMD erased a six-goal second half deficit to move to 3-0 on the season.

Maryland is the first team since Ohio State on March 21, 2017 to sweep all four weekly honors in the same week.

The Terps play Villanova Tuesday at 4 pm in their lone midweek matchup of the regular season.
