MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – Senior Alice Barnsdale earned a bronze medal earlier this month at the British Athletics Championships in her native England. Barnsdale competed in the hammer where she placed third with a final throw of 62.05m (203'6").
"Getting the bronze medal means so much because it's my first senior national medal," said Barnsdale. "I am extremely thankful to have been able to compete this summer, and to end my season with a medal at the British Championships was a major highlight. Overall, my summer season went well and it was the first time my season average has been over 60 meters. This makes me super excited for the upcoming season. I'm excited to see what our team can do this year!"
Barnsdale is the current school record holder in the women's hammer throw with a personal best of 62.75m (205'8"). Her performance at British Championships in the event was her second-best career attempt just 70cm shy of her lifetime best.
"Alice is someone who I am counting on to be a key contributor this year for our team at the Big Ten and NCAA level," said head coach Andrew Valmon. "Earning a spot on the podium in international competition shows that Alice is ready for consistent performances in championship settings. This accomplishment should bring her to a new level in the upcoming seasons. I am looking forward to seeing what her and Coach Coleman are able to contribute in the throws events this year."
Barnsdale is set to compete next for the Terps this winter during the 2020 indoor season in the weight throw. Her current best of 18.02m (59'1") places her eight all-time in the event at Maryland.
