ROSEMONT, Ill. – After earning a complete game victory in Monday's start vs. Penn State, freshman pitcher Jason Savacool earns Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades for the second time in three weeks, as announced by the conference Wednesday morning.
The freshman right-hander was tremendous in his third collegiate start, getting the ball for Monday's rubber game vs. Penn State in which he tossed nine innings of one run ball – the lone run being unearned – and earning the win against a Nittany Lion lineup that combined for 16 runs the prior two days.
Savacool allowed just five hits in his third start on the mound, all of them singles, didn't walk a single batter, and struck out three to remain a perfect 3-0 on the year. The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native also tossed a complete game in his first start of the season vs. Michigan State, being named the conference freshman of the week for his performance in week one.
Now a two-time honoree of the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, Savacool becomes one of 11 pitchers nationally to toss two complete games this season, and the only freshman to do so. Savacool becomes the only pitcher to throw multiple complete games their freshman season in "power" conference baseball since 2015, when four pitchers achieved the feat.
Perfect Game's Preseason Big Ten Newcomer of the Year, Savacool now leads the conference in innings pitched (23.2) and wins (3), while ranking sixth in ERA (2.28). He also becomes the first Maryland hurler to throw multiple complete games in a season since Hunter Parsons and Taylor Bloom both tossed two in 2018.
Maryland returns to the diamond next weekend for four games in Columbus, Ohio. The Terps will face Iowa twice and Ohio State twice starting Saturday, March 27. All games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
