Orlando, FL – The Maryland track and field squads opened their outdoor season on day one of the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by UCF in Orlando, Florida. 

Day one was headlined by Kayla Thorpe's program record throw in the javelin. Thorpe is expected to continue breaking records in this event this season. 

Women's Notes:

• Kayla Thorpe (43.44m) set a new program record in the javelin throw, and earned a fifth place result in the event to open her outdoor season. 

• Jayla Bynum (15.37m) took third place in the shot put. Kayla Thorpe placed 7th and Sarah George placed 9th for three top ten finishes. 

• Anna Coffin (4:26.82) took seventh in the 1500m and set a new personal best in the event. Katie Altieri also set a 4 second personal best running 4:31.46. Katie Turk (4:39.69) Amanda Eliker (4:41.66) and Emma Pegg also competed. 

• Kayla Woods jumped 5.81m in the long jump for her outdoor opener. 

• Madison Depry (25.16), Maya Mosley (25.62) Jaiden Ritter and Ariana Ealy-Pulido opened their seasons with the 200m.

• Kattiana Ealy-Pulido, Tolu Akinduro, and Michaela Bracken opened their seasons representing the Terps in the 400m hurdles. 

Men's Notes:

• Eric Albright (3:50.65) opened his season with a seventh place run in the 1500m and a 6 second personal best.

• Jeff Kline notched his first victory of the outdoor season winning the shot put event. 

• Rhys Allen opened his season with a top ten result in the discus, throwing 48.96m and taking eighth place.

• Tyler Baruch (7.14m) took ninth in the long jump after qualifying for finals.

• Brandon James (21.64) Kevin Collins (22.15) Joe Ewan (22.33) and Brandon Turpin (22.50) competed in the 200m. 

• Drake Murphy represented the Terps in the 400m hurdles.

"This weekend we are focused on getting our feet back on the ground in the outdoor season and building team momentum."
