Nelligan Adds Pair of Gymnasts to 2024 Recruiting Class

COLLEGE PARK, MD — This past week, the Maryland gymnastics team signed two more members of its 2024 signing class, as head coach Brett Nelligan secured Addie Hewitt and Maggie Murphy for next year's squad. Both gymnasts have excelled at the high school and club level, winning with high-level accolades during their careers. 

"We are thrilled to welcome Maggie Murphy and Addie Hewitt to the Maryland gymnastics family," Nelligan said. "Both Maggie and Addie embody everything we look for in a GymTerp; a relentless drive to be the best both in the gym as well as the classroom."

Before Maryland: Addie Hewitt joins Maryland gymnastics after a standout career at both the high school and club level in her hometown of Denver, Colorado. Hewitt was the 2023 State and Region 3 Champion on beam and in the all-around. Hewitt also was a three-time Nationals qualifier in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

As a student, Hewitt is a member of the Model UN and Medical Club as well as a founder of the Card Game Club at her high school. Outside of the classroom, Hewitt was a volunteer counselor at Adam's Camp, an organization that allows kids and adults with cognitive disabilities to attend a summer camp. In the gym, Hewitt took part in coaching the compulsory gymnasts, as well organizing birthday parties and club events.  
Addie Hewitt: "I love the high-quality academics that are offered at Maryland, as well as its location among several major cities. The athletic program at Maryland is exceptional and being a part of a Big Ten program is a dream come true! I love the gymnastics team's culture and the feeling of family within the team."

Before Maryland: Maggie Murphy, a native of Massachusetts, joins the 2024 signing class as a three-time Nationals qualifier. Murphy earned a spot in the top 15AA at the 2023 Nationals for vault and floor. Murphy also competed at the 2023 regionals, finishing in first place on bars, second in the all-around, second on beam, and third on floor. Murphy placed third in the  all-around, second on vault, and third on floor at the Massachusetts state championship. Murphy is no stranger to success by being ranked in the top 100 nationally for vault at 9.925 and reaching her career high of 9.800 for floor. Murphy placed first on vault and beam at the her 2022 and 2021 regional championships.

As a student, Murphy has been on her high school's honor roll as well as has volunteered for her school's Adaptive PE program and Special Olympics. 
Maggie Murphy: "I chose Maryland not only for their high academic and athletic rankings but also for how positive and welcoming the coaches and team are! The coaches and team really made an impact on me, making me feel like family. The minute I stepped foot on campus it immediately felt like home and I knew this was where I wanted to be. I also love how close it is to D.C. and all the opportunities the university has to offer."
Head Coach Brett Nelligan: "Maggie has incredible power, especially on floor and vault where she will contend for lineup spots right away. A relentlessly hard worker, her bars and beam are on the rise as well."
