Maryland Hosts No. 24 Nebraska Saturday Night

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland gymnastics team hosts No. 24 Nebraska on Saturday night at the XFINITY Center. The meet begins at 6 p.m., and fans can watch the action live on B1G+. 

This week's meet is the Terps Talk Mental Health meet, featuring: 
  • Green rally towels: given out to the first 100 fans!
  • Green ribbons: given out while supplies last. 
  • Autograph cards: given out to the first 100 fans! 
  • A special appearance by Testudo!
 
SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Terps are focused on bouncing back after their second loss, scoring a 195.800 vs.Ohio State, who topped Maryland with a 196.625. 
  • The Terps opened their conference schedule with a 196.450-195.550 win over Rutgers. 
  • Alexa Rothenbuescher had a stellar performance on floor against Ohio State with a 9.925, leading the event. 
  • Freshman Natalie Martin achieved a personal best on floor, scoring a 9.900 against Ohio State.
  • Victoria Gatzendorfer and Alexa Rothenbuescher tied for Maryland's best score on bars with a 9.825 against Ohio State. 
  • Emma Silberman is now among Maryland's top ten scorers of all time. She recently surpassed Stephanie Giameo for seventh all time. 
  • Martin and Silberman were named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch before the season.
  • The GymTerps are now ranked No. 28 in the Road to Nationals rankings following Ohio State.
Graduate Student Emma Silberman ranks seventh all-time in Maryland gymnastics history in career points scored and was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2023.
50 Years of Maryland gymnastics
  • In the 2023-24 season, Maryland gymnastics will celebrate its 50th year of competition. 
  • The team's first year of action came in 1973-74, when head coach Patricia Long assembled a roster of seven student-athletes to practice in the annex gym of Cole Field House. Four head coaches and 49 years later, the Terps fielded a roster of 22 gymnasts that competed on the XFINITY Center court during the 2022-23 season.

Brett Nelligan
Brett Nelligan enters his fifteenth season as head coach of the Terrapins in 2023-24. Nelligan became the fourth head coach in program history on May 1, 2009, following the retirement of his father, Bob Nelligan.
Freshman sensation 
  • Freshman Natalie Martin was named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch prior to the season.
  • Martin was also named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week following her outstanding performances against Rutgers and Minnesota.
  • In last Sunday's meet against Ohio State, Martin reached a new career high on floor scoring a 9.900. 
  • Martin also led Maryland on vault and beam against Ohio State, achieving a score of 9.875 on vault and 9.875 on beam.
  • Martin had an impressive debut in the season opener against West Chester earning scores of a 9.850 on vault, 9.850 on beam, and a 9.875 on floor.
