Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Sydney Lewis, Hannah Runk and Diamond Williams all hit home runs in Maryland softball's 10-2 win over Fairfield on Sunday at Maryland Softball Stadium. The game was the Terps' third of the weekend as the host of the Maryland Softball Tournament.
Maryland (11-14) fell behind by two runs in the first inning but scored all 10 of its runs unanswered. Lewis' two-run home run in the third inning gave Maryland the lead. It was her fifth home run of her career and third of the season.
Runk and Williams homered in the fourth inning to extend the lead. Runk, a freshman, blasted her first career home run on a two-run shot. Williams followed with a two-run home run, her eighth of the season, shortly after. She went 2-for-3 and added a double.
Courtney Wyche pitched in another dominant outing in the circle. She passed Monica Cyphert and moved into the fifth spot on Maryland's career strikeout list. She struck out a season-high 11 batters in the game and has 502 strikeouts in her five-year career. She is one of four players to reach 500 career strikeouts.
Wyche pitched the 40th complete game of her career and allowed just one hit. She received her sixth win of the season.
Jaeda McFarland went 3-for-4 and recorded three hits in a game for the second time in the tournament. She hit two doubles and added two RBIs and a run. Her RBI double in the sixth inning drove home Megan Mikami and ended the game prematurely. Mikami went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and an RBI.
Fairfield (3-14) scored all of its runs off a two-run smash by Allie Bridgman.
Breaking Down The Action
- Allie Bridgman hit a two-run home run to left-center in the top and Fairfield took a 2-0 lead.
- Mazie MacFarlane drove home Megan Mikami with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. The Teprs trailed 2-1.
- Courtney Wyche struck out five straight batters, including the side in the second inning.
- Sydney Lewis homered to center field and drove home two runs in the process. Maryland claimed a 3-2 advantage in the third.
- Hannah Runk hit a two-run home run in the fourth, the first home run of her career, to take a 5-2 lead. Jaeda McFarland doubled shortly after to score another run for the Terps. Diamond Williams joined the long ball party and also hit a two-run home run. Maryland took an 8-2 lead in the inning.
- Wyche got herself in a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, but she struck out the final batter to end the inning. She recorded three strikeouts in the inning.
- Mikami hit a triple to drive home a run in the sixth inning. McFarland then drove her home with a double to end the game.
Terps In The Record Books
- Wyche struck out 11 batters in the game to increase her career total to 502, which is fifth all-time after passing Monica Cyphert (2001-04). She became one of four players to notch 500 in a career. Next on the list is Amanda Bettker (1999-2002) with 546 in her career.
- Wyche is also seventh on the all-time innings pitched list with 516.2 in her career and is just two innings from passing Cyphert.
- Wyche received her 47th win of her career, tied for fifth all-time. She's just one win away from passing Kaitlyn Schmeiser (2012-15) and Cyphert to stand alone.
- Wyche pitched the 40th complete game of her career, which is tied for fifth all-time. She's one away from breaking the tie with Jessica Aditays (2002-05).
