COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 25-ranked North Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park. With the loss, the Terps end the regular season 7-9 overall with a 1-7 mark in the ACC.
The Tar Heels earned the doubles point, sweeping all three doubles matches. In a battle at the No. 1 doubles position, pitting the 51st ranked doubles team of Marcio Petrone and Greg Archer from North Carolina against the 50th ranked team of freshman Haris Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and senior Jonathan Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.), Carolina came out on top, defeating Maryland's top duo, 8-2. The loss drops Causevic and Murchison's record together to 8-5. The freshman tandem of Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) and David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) fell to Nicholas Monroe and Dan Pinchbeck of the Tar Heels, 8-0 at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 position, juniors Greg Chambers (Silver Spring, Md.) and Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) lost to Trystan Meniane and Geoff Boyd, 8-1.
In singles play, Causevic fell to Petrone, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. He concludes the regular season with a 10-6 record in singles action. In his first match at the No. 2 position this season, Murchison lost to Meniane of the Tar Heels, 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 3 spot, Pinchbeck of Carolina defeated Chiu, 6-2, 6-3. Demers fell at the No. 4 position to Monroe, 6-2, 6-0. Reichsfeld ended the regular season with a 10-6 record after losing to Boyd, 6-1, 6-2. Competing in his eighth match of the season, Maryland's Jeff Fink (Purchase, N.Y.) fell to Andrew Metzler, 6-1, 6-0.
With the regular season complete, Coach Laitta's squad sets its sights on the ACC Championships, which begin Thursday and run through Sunday, at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.
