Men's Tennis Eliminated From ACC Championshps With Loss To Virginia

April 18, 2002

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 8 seed Maryland men's tennis team lost to No. 7 seed Virginia, 4-0, in the opening round of the ACC Championships Thursday at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. The loss eliminates the Terrapins from competition in the tournament. Maryland ends its season with a 7-10 record.

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early one-point lead by capturing the all-important doubles point, winning two matches. Virginia's Mike Duquette and Jonathan Chou defeated the No. 50-ranked doubles team of freshman Haris Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and senior Jonathan Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.), 8-6, at the No. 1 position. The loss drops the pair's record together to 8-6 for the season. At the No. 3 spot, Maryland juniors Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) and Greg Chambers (Md.) fell to Stephen Nolen and Greg Alpert, 8-5. Chiu and Chambers drop to 6-8 for the year together. After the Cavaliers captured two victories to secure the doubles point, freshmen Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) and David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) did not finish their match against Jason Romesburg and Jay Curtis of Virginia.

In singles competition, Nolen beat Murchison at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Chiu lost to Romesburg, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 3 position. At the No. 6 spot, Chambers fell to Alpert in two very close sets, 6-3, 7-5. With three wins in singles competition and the point Virginia earned in doubles, the Cavaliers secured the win. The remaining scheduled singles matches were not completed.

Coach Laitta's squad returns home to College Park after concluding its season. The Terps' seven victories this year are the most in the non-scholarship program since 1992. The men will switch their focus to next year with six of seven players returning. The team will try and build on the experience they gained and great accomplishments they made this season in hopes of becoming a force in the ACC in 2003.
