Biography
As a Freshman (2011-12): One of Maryland's top distance swimmers...tallied top five times on the team in the 500 free (4:30.62), 1000 free (9:32.85), 1650 free (15:46.27) and 400 IM (4:03.41)...took third in the 500 free (4:30.62), sixth in the 400 IM (4:09.39), eighth in the 200 fly (1:57.40) and third in the 1650 free (15:47.57) at the Terp Cup.
Before Maryland: Swam for four seasons at Westford Academy under head coaches Caitlin Klick and Harriet Kinnett...2011 and 2010 State Champion in 500 free...2011 runner-up and 2010 3rd place in 200 free...2010 and 2011 Lowell Sun Swimmer of the Year, 2010 and 2011 Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic...swam for 10 seasons with Patriot Swim Club under head coach Jeff Johnson...National Qualifier in the 1000 free...USA Swimming Scholastic All-American...Eastern Zone Meet Record holder in the 400 free...also recruited by Pittsburgh, George Mason, Delaware, Buffalo, Kenyon.
Personal: Full name is Matthew Nichols Tynan...son of John and Mary Ellen Tynan...father swam at Loyola College of Baltimore from 1984-1985...has one younger sister, Mara, 15...hometown is Westford, MA...named to the academic Honor Roll 11 terms...chose Maryland because of its coaches, swimmers, academics, and facilities...plans to coach college swimming in the future.
