March 7, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Two of college lacrosse's coaching deans will face-off against each other on Tuesday as the Terps led by Dick Edell, in his 28th season of coaching, faces Bucknell and 33-year head coach Sid Jamieson in Maryland's first meeting with the Bison in nearly 20 years. Maryland enters Tuesday's game against Bucknell with a 1-1 record (0-1 in the ACC) coming off a heartbreaking 9-8 loss at No. 5 Duke on Saturday, following a convincing 19-3 victory over intrastate rival Mount St. Mary's in the season opener on Feb. 27. "Big Man," as he is affectionately known, has led his teams to 19 NCAA Tournament appearances (15 in Division I), including 11 at Maryland. He has also led the Terps to three ACC championships and three NCAA championship game appearances. He was named the National Coach of the Year by the USILA in 1978 and 1995. Terps' Last Game:
No. 5 Duke 9, No. 8 Maryland 8
DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior attackmen T.J. Durnan and Jared Frood combined for five goals, including the game-winner with 1:58 left in regulation, as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils (3-0) defeated No. 8 Maryland, 9-8, in ACC men's lacrosse action at Duke's Koskinen Stadium.

The Blue Devils took charge early, building a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Duke's first goal came on an extra-man opportunity, as Durnan fed Frood for the score. Sophomore Greg Patchak and senior Craig Schubert also added goals for the Blue Devils as Maryland's Mike LaMonica scored the only Terp goal of the first period.

Frood added an unassisted goal early in the second quarter, bringing the Duke lead to 4-1. Then the Terrapin floodgates opened, as Maryland scored five goals in a six-minute period to go up 6-4. Terp attackman Marcus LaChapelle led the way during the scoring spree with three goals (two unassisted) and an assist. Maryland also got goals from Mike Morsell and Chris Malone. LaChapelle's goal output (three) equalled his career high in a single game.

Duke stopped the bleeding before the half, as Durnan and Patchak scored two quick goals with under a minute to play to tie the score at six at halftime. Patchak's came with 0:03 left in the half.

The Blue Devils hung on to that momentum in the third quarter, scoring the first two goals to go up, 8-6. Maryland's Craig Hochstadt then scored on an extra-man opportunity and Malone added another to even the score again at eight.

The teams remained tied for the first 13 minutes of the final period, until the Durnan-Frood combination struck again. This time Frood fed Durnan for the score and the 9-8 lead. Duke won the following face-off, but wasn't able to hold on to the ball for the remainder of the game. Maryland gained possession with nearly a half-minute remaining, but was a man-down due to a slashing penalty. The Duke defense prevented the Terps from getting a clean shot off, as the Blue Devils notched the victory .

Duke goalkeeper Matt Breslin tallied 13 saves in the victory, as Terrapin goalie Pat McGinnis recorded nine. Maryland had 31 shots to Duke's 26, while the teams were nearly even in ground balls (Duke 36, Maryland 38) and face-offs (Maryland 9/20, Duke 11/20).

Duke has won the six of the last 10 meetings in this storied series, but Saturday's victory marked Duke's first home win over Maryland since the 1954 season.

Mollot Moves To The Top

Redshirt freshman Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) has moved to the top of the Maryland scoring chart after just two college games. The preseason All-American attackman leads the Terps in points with seven and assists with five.

He tallied three assists in the loss to Duke last Saturday. In his first collegiate game against Mount St. Mary's, Mollot netted two goals and added two assists.

Scoring In Both Games Four different Terps have scored goals in both Maryland games thus far in the season. Marcus LaChapelle is tied for the team lead in goals scored with four after tying his career high with three at Duke.

Chris Malone has scored a pair of goals in both games for four while Mike Morsell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) netted his fourth goal against Duke after opening the season with a hat trick in 1:44 against Mount St. Mary's.

Mike LaMonica has scored one goal in each game.

Updating Scoring Streaks Dating back to last season, three players have scoring streaks spanning at least four games led by Chris Malone, who has scored in six straight games (6 points, 5 assists, 11 points). Marcus LaChapelle has scored in five straight (6-5-11) and Mike LaMonica has scored one goal in each of his last four games dating to the 1999 season.

Hochstadt Scores First Of Year Sophomore Craig Hochstadt scored his first goal of the season against Duke to bring the Terps to within 8-7 late in the third quarter.

Hochstadt, who had three assists against Mount St. Mary's, scored one goal in his freshman campaign with the Terps, when he scored against Dartmouth on March 23, 1999.

LaChapelle Likes Facing Duke

Marcus LaChapelle has enjoyed his last two games against Duke when it comes to scoring, after tying his career high with three goals and adding an assist against the Blue Devils last Saturday. In his last two games against Duke, LaChapelle has four goals and five assists for nine points.

McGinnis Makes Pair Of Debuts

Junior goalie Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) made his first career start in goal in the Terps' 19-3 win over Mount St. Mary's. McGinnis had a strong debut allowing just one goal and making 10 saves in 45 minutes of action. His saves mark and minutes played mark both eclipsed his previous career bests of five saves and 15 minutes played.

He made his first career ACC start against Duke on Saturday, stopping nine shots. Starting Debuts Pat McGinnis was one of three Terps to make their starting debut against Mount St. Mary's. Joining the goalie were freshman attackman Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior defenseman David Rose (Lutherville, Md.)

Freshman defenseman Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) made his first career start against Duke. Defense Doing The Job In holding Mount St. Mary's to just three goals in the season opener, the Terps posted their best defensive effort since allowing just two goals to Radford in a 21-2 rout on April 1, 1997.

Maryland held the Mountaineers scoreless for the first 24:54 of the season opener. Dating back to last season's finale against UMBC, Maryland had held its opponent scoreless for nearly 60 minutes. The Retrievers were held without a goal in the entire second half and scored their seventh and final goal of that game on May 8, 1999 with 3:26 left in the first half.

Overall, Maryland did not allow a goal for 58:20 spanning the two games over two seasons.

Career-Highs Set

In the romp over Mount St. Mary's, several Terps set career highs in offensive statistics, led by Andrew Combs, who broke his career high for total points with five (previously three vs. Towson on March 7, 1998) and assists with three (previously one set on seven occasions).

Mike Morsell recorded his first multi-goal game with a natural hat trick in the fourth quarter. He surpassed his entire career-goal total of two, set in his freshman year of 1999.

Craig Hochstadt recorded his first career assists with three against the Mountaineers. That also set his high for points in a game.

Scoring Initiation

Six different Terp freshman scored their first collegiate goals against Mount St. Mary's led by Mike Mollot, who tallied twice. Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.), Chris Edwards (Baltimore, Md.), Brett Harper (Upper Arlington, Ohio), Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.) and Ricky Sears (Chevy Chase, Md.) also scored in their initial college games.

Freshman Jamie Daue (Lutherville, Md.) recorded his first point on an assist to Leary in the fourth.

Maryland In Season Openers

After defeating Mount St. Mary's, Maryland has a 71-3-1 (.953) lifetime record in season openers dating back to the 1924 season. The Terps have won their last seven openers and 15 of the last 16, with the only loss coming to Duke in 1993.

After losing their 1925 opener to Yale, 5-3, the Terps went on to win 40 consecutive season openers from 1926 through 1967. The streak was broken when Maryland tied Princeton, 6-6, in the 1968 opener. Following the deadlock, Maryland went on to win its next 14 openers, giving the Terps a 54-0-1 record over a 57-year span (Maryland did not field a team in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.)

Preseason Honors

Maryland has stacked up numerous preseason accolades heading into the 2000 season. All four senior captains -- Jason Carrier (Boonton Township, N.J.), Casey Connor (Baltimore, Md.), Jeff Shirk and Brian Zeller -- have been honored by several outlets.

Carrier has been named an honorable mention All-American by Face-Off Magazine and College Lacrosse USA.

Connor, who was a USILA honorable mention All-American in 1999, was named a preseason second team All-American by both Face-Off Magazine and College Lacrosse USA. He was also named to the preseason All-ACC team by College Lacrosse USA.

Shirk has been named a preseason first team All-American by Face-Off Magazine and a third team All-American by College Lacrosse USA.

Zeller opens the season as a preseason second team All-American by Face-Off Magazine and College Lacrosse USA. He was also named to the preseason All-ACC team by College Lacrosse USA.

Shirk, Zeller and Connor were all named as "ACC Players To Watch" by Face-Off Magazine. Shirk was also named a preseason All-American by the Baltimore Sun.

Also earning accolades are junior Chris Malone (Timonium, Md.) and redshirt freshman Mike Mollot.

QUOTING THE TERPS

Following the Duke loss, here are some postgame comments.

Maryland Head Coach Dick Edell:

"Every time we take the field, my plea to the kids is to play the game as hard as you can and I really think we did that (against Duke). The other thoughts are to play it smart and play it well and we can improve on that.

"We can play better than we played today and we can play a little bit smarter. We can't play any harder.

"We had opportunities to win and I am disappointed in the final goal, which I feel was a result of bad defense no so much as good offense with intricate moves. That's my biggest disappointment.

"I'm an old fart, but I'm smart enough to know we are going to play six times in the next 21 days. If you dwell on what happened here today, we're going to have a poor season."

On Pat McGinnis: "We don't look for excuses, if that's the kind of game we are going to get out of Pat season-long, we're going to be fine. He waited two years and now he has the opportunity and I think he's really seizing the opportunity."

Senior Attacker Marcus LaChapelle:

"This is very disappointing to have control of the game and make mistakes. We made too many mistakes in the second half and pretty much gave it to them. They didn't win the game, we lost it.

"We have plenty of motivation. This is adding fuel to the fire. Hopefully we can take this and turn it into a positive for the rest of the season."

Junior Goalie Pat McGinnis:

"Your first time playing a game like this, you always know its going to be a hard game. We got a spark from the offense and the defense played hard. I wish I could have made more saves.

"It's tough opening at their field, I just wish I could have made more saves."
