North Carolina Outlasts Maryland Baseball Team 13-11

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior outfielder Matt McKay went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI, leading North Carolina (32-9, 6-8 ACC) to a wild 13-11 win over Maryland (13-24, 0-11 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. The game marked the second of a three-game conference series between the two schools.

After the Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Terps exploded for eight runs in the top of the third inning to take an 8-1 advantage. Junior outfielder Brian Patenaude and junior shortstop Sean Lomas each drilled a two-run double. Senior outfielder Larry Long and senior second baseman Jason Mohap each added a RBI single.

North Carolina responded in the bottom of the third inning with four runs, cutting the deficit to 8-6. Senior outfielder Matt McKay provided the big blow when he doubled home a pair of runs.

McKay struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out grand slam. It was part of a six-run inning that gave the Tar Heels an 11-8 lead.

Maryland kept in the game with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to 12-11. Mohap and junior third baseman Steve Oursler each singled home a run and Patenaude scored on a sacrifice fly.

North Carolina closed out the game with a run in the sixth inning and held the Terps scoreless the rest of the way.

Senior righthander B.J. Finnerty (5-0) got the win while freshman righthander Mike Dallmeyer (1-2) got tagged with the loss. Senior righthander Derrick DePriest picked up his eighth save of the season.

For the Terps, Patenaude, Oursler, Mohap, Long and sophomore outfielder Matt Swope each had two hits.

Maryland and North Carolina conclude their series Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
