Lacrosse All-American Michael Howley Named To U.S. Men's Lacrosse World Team

June 18, 2001

BALTIMORE, Md. - Maryland All-American defenseman Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) is one of 23 players selected to represent the United States in the 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship. The World Championship will be played from July 6-14, 2002 in Perth, Australia. The 23 players were selected from 121 players participating in a three-day tryout from June 15-17 at the University of Delaware. The U.S. is the defending ILF champion, having won the 1998 World Championship by defeating Canada 15-14 in overtime at Baltimore's Homewood Field.

"After an exhausting three-day tryout period, the 2002 US Men's Team coaching staff and the player selection committee is very pleased and impressed with the quality of the 23 players selected," said U.S. head coach Jack Emmer, the all-time winningest active coach in college lacrosse. "Given the high quality and diverse experience of the 121 player candidates, the challenge to select the best 23 was daunting. But we are thrilled with the final team and its unique combination of outstanding young talent and savvy veteran experience. We look forward to taking this team to Perth, Australia to defend our World Championship."

Howley started all 16 games in helping the Terps to the 2001 NCAA Quarterfinals. He led the team in groundballs, while scoring twice and adding three assists.
