CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- North Carolina left fielder Sean Farrell went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Tar Heels to a convincing 20-8 victory over Maryland Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. The win for Carolina gave the Tar Heels a three-game sweep over the Terrapins.
In the top of the first inning, junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) drilled his team-leading 10th home run of the season to left field to give Maryland a 1-0 lead.
North Carolina answered with seven runs on six hits along with the help of two Maryland errors in the bottom of the first. Maryland starter Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) could not get out of the first, as he yielded all seven runs, five earned, on six hits in 1/3 of an inning pitched.
Carolina continued to feast on Terrapin pitching in the second, as the Tar Heels led off the inning with three consecutive home runs to increase their lead to 10-1.
In the fourth, second baseman Chad Prosser drove in his second run of the game with a RBI-groundout and Farrell drove in his third run of the contest with a RBI-double to give UNC a 12-1 lead.
Maryland second baseman Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) drove in a run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, to score junior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.). Later in the frame, senior Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) scored two with a RBI-single to center, making the score 12-4.
UNC continued to roll offensively by scoring four runs in the fifth to increase its lead to 16-4.
The Terrapins scored two in the sixth on a RBI-groundout by Gemmill and a RBI-single by senior Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.).
In the seventh, McCurdy drove in his second run of the game with a RBI-groundout to cut the Carolina lead to 16-7.
The Tar Heels scored four more times in the bottom of the seventh to increase the lead to 20-7. Maryland would score once more in the ninth to close out the scoring at 20-8.
North Carolina starter Daniel Moore (2-0) pitched six innings and allowed six runs on six hits with seven strikeouts to earn the victory for the Tar Heels.
For the Terps, McDonald led the way offensively by going 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.
With the loss, Maryland falls to 14-5 overall and 0-3 in the ACC while North Carolina is now 10-8 and 3-0 in the conference. The Terrapins are back in action Tuesday, March 19, when they host St. Joseph's at 3p.m.
