COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland women's basketball team (7-6, 1-1 ACC) captured its first conference win, a 71-63 victory over Georgia Tech (11-2, 0-2 ACC) on Sunday in the Comcast Center. The Terrapins never trailed in the game. The win came in Maryland head coach Brenda Frese's 100th career game as a head coach and marks the first ACC win of her career.
The Terrapins jumped out to an 8-2 lead off a balanced attack and tenacious defense. Junior transfer Delvona Oliver (Euclid, Ohio), who earned the first start of her career against the Jackets, and Renneika Razor (New York City, N.Y.) led Maryland with eight points apiece, as they took a 42-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Terri Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.) saved 11 of her team-high 16 points for Maryland's second half effort to stave off the Yellow Jackets' charge. Georgia Tech closed the gap to as few as two points with 3:23 remaining in the second half, but the Terrapins held on for the eight-point win, posting a season-low 13 turnovers.
Four Terrapins scored in double figures, led by Daniels who had a team-high 16. Razor and freshman Angel Ross (Midlothian, Va.) finished with 12, while Oliver pitched in with 10 points. Razor also tied her career-high for steals with 7 and is currently eighth on Maryland's all-time list in that category with 210.
Georgia Tech's Sonja Mallory scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in the losing effort.
Maryland hosts Clemson on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Comcast Center. Georgia Tech hosts No. 1 Duke on Monday, Jan. 13, in its next action.
