Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team hit six home runs and 24 hits in their 21-4 trouncing of University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The Terps' 13 doubles ties an NCAA record for doubles in a game. Minnesota last performed this feat against Rutgers on March 18, 1991, and New Mexico State also recorded 13 doubles against Western New Mexico on April 7, 1987.

The Terrapins' (5-7) 24 hits against the Retrievers (2-10), marks the first time they scored 20 or more runs in a game since they faced Coppin State on May 7, 2002. Maryland had not recorded 20 or more hits in a game since they hit 23 at UMBC on May 1, 2002. Eight Terrapins had multiple hits in the game.

Anthony Buffone had an incredible day at the plate hitting four doubles and one home run for seven RBI. Buffone was the last Maryland player to hit at least six RBI in a game when he had six against Vermont on March 8, 2002. Dan Melvin had a career-high four hits in the game and Brian Jarosinski tied his career high with four RBI.

The Terrapins wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Jarosinski hit a three-run shot in the first inning for his fifth home run of the season.

Maryland continued flexing its power at the plate in the third inning. Will Frazier and Elliot Singletary each hit their second home runs of the season, sending two-run homers to center field in the inning. Buffone added on another run for the Terps in the third, knocking in Matt Maropis with a double off the wall in right center.

With two outs in the fourth inning Frazier and Melvin hit back-to-back doubles and they both came around to score when Jordan Wilson hit the first home run of his career, extending the Terps' lead to 12-1.

The Terps continued their offensive showcase in the sixth inning. Frazier scored the first run of the inning, coming in on a wild pitch. Truan Mehl then knocked in Melvin with an RBI single. Maryland kept going and loaded up the bases for Buffone. He took advantage by hitting a grand slam to center. It was the first grand slam hit by a Terrapin since Jonny Bass hit one at UMBC on May 1, 2002.

In the eighth inning, Maryland extended its lead to 20-2 with Buffone and Jarosinski hitting RBI-doubles in the inning. Joe Sargent tacked on another run in the ninth, hitting a solo homer to left for his first of the season.

Chris Bowen earned the win in his second career-start and struck out a career-high four batters. Bowen allowed one run on four hits without issuing a walk. His five innings of work is the most in his career.

Josh Andrews pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the sixth and Chris McCafferty made his collegiate debut in the seventh. Casey Baron came out of the bullpen in the eighth inning and Dan Waters came on to relieve in the ninth. Eighteen Terrapins saw action against the Retrievers.

After his four-double performance today, Buffone stands one double shy of the all-time lead at Maryland with 46. Three players are tied at the top with 47 career doubles.

The Terrapins will be host the University of Hartford on Saturday, March 13, at 1 p.m., at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md.
